Escher’s Solid
Escher’s solid is a polyhedra containing three interpenetrating cubes. This structure appears in many sketches and woodcut prints of the artist M.C.Escher. We are fascinated by this unit cell (it is the first stellation of a rhombic dodecahedron) which on tessellation fills all of 3D space. We generated this image in Mathematica.
Computational Art
Spinodal decomposition occurs when one thermodynamic phase spontaneously separates into two phases. This physical phenomena is commonly observed in metal alloys, polymer solutions, and in material microstructures. We generated this image in mathematica.
Moiré Pattern
A Moiré pattern results when a set of straight or curved lines are superposed onto one another. It’s commonly observed in 2D materials, such as graphene layers placed on one on top of another, and is hypothesized to play a role in dramatic changes to the materials physical properties (e.g., conductivity and optical properties). We generated this image in Mathematica.
Mathematics & Art
A geometric pattern is a collection of shapes, which when repeated creates a cohesive design. We see geometric patterns in material microstructures, which under certain boundary conditions are energetically favorable. In this image we write a computer code to generate geometric art (inspired by an Islamic tesssellation) by regularly repeating a motif with star polygons (8 nodes, 22 nodes) on a hexagonal lattice.
